Diana Ross is Coming to Town!

The word icon is thrown about liberally, most times quite undeservedly. That has never been the case for Diana Ross, who attained that status long before it was trendy. The word icon is thrown about liberally, most times quite undeservedly. That has never been the case for Diana Ross, who attained that status long before it was trendy. As part of the Motown firmament with the Supremes and as a solo star, she’s always been a singer who stood out from the rest via her signature glamour, vocals and mane of hair. Ross, 66, has proved her worth as an entertainer, taking charge of her career as both a singer and an Oscar-nominated actress ("Lady Sings the Blues"). As if that weren’t enough, she’s also known as a savvy businesswoman and marketer and mentored a young Michael Jackson as the Jackson Five joined the Motown stable. This show is the second leg of the “More Today Than Yesterday Tour,” which features tributes to some of those artists and custom costumes; her dramatic stage performances have influenced many divas-in-waiting too obvious to even mention names. Ross’ shadow looms over the entertainment industry via her own family, too; daughter Tracee ("Girlfriends") and son Evan ("90210") are actors, while daughter Rhonda sings and acts (The Temptations, Another World). If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, consider them acolytes, too.

Among innumerable operatic adaptations of the Bard’s plays, one of the most enduring is Charles Gounod’s of "Romeo and Juliet." It simplifies the story, but makes room for romantic slush, dramatic clashes and Juliet’s waltzing aria “Je veux vivre” (“I want to live”). Opening Friday at the Winspear Opera House, the Dallas Opera’s production features tenor Charles Castronovo in his company debut, and returns for soprano Lyubov Petrova (previously seen here as Zerbinetta in "Ariadne auf Naxos" and Susanna in "The Marriage of Figaro") and veteran British bass Robert Lloyd (as Friar Lawrence).
